Change the Things I Can

What do we have the most control over in life? Simple. Ourselves! There are many things we can't control, only our reaction to them. See my previous blog for some everyday examples of these. Here I want to discuss what we can change - what we can determine the course of. To a large extent these all relate to ourselves.

We're all familiar with these. Who hasn't made a resolution to lose twenty pounds in the New Year? Almost all of us have! This is something completely within our control. No one can make us eat another hotdog, or eat a bag of chips. Our friends and family might expose us to temptation, but we make the final decision whether or not to indulge.

Another part of such a resolution generally includes exercise. It doesn't matter whether you join a gym, purchase home work out equipment, or simply take up walking. Exercise is a vital component in any weight loss program. Again, only we can make the decision to exercise regularily. Family and friends can only offer encouragement ( or discouragment as the case may be).

Look, the point is this, it may seem hopeless at times. You may think you've tried it all and it doesn't matter what you do. You're just destined to be overweight. Rubbish! Yes, some people have a more difficult time losing and keeping off weight, but we all possess the ability to sucessfully lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle. You just have to want it badly enough. It is completely in your control.

Another example of something within our control is learning a musical instrument. It doesn't matter how old you are. You can learn to play a musical instrument, and play it well. Yes it will take time, and yes it will take comittment, but all of us have the capabiltiy to learn a musical instrument. It's a matter of will power and determenantion.

Finally, what about changing careers? How many of us feel stuck in a dead end job? Or maybe you have a well paying job, but you don't enjoy what you're doing - you're simply too scared to make a change and give up such a well paying job. Go ahead, take the plunge! You'll thank yourself for it. It's never too late. You can do it.

So yes, there are many things in life we have absolutely no control over. Forget about them, put them aside. Concentrate on the things you can change. Your life will be richer for it, and you will lose the sense of dissillusionment that so many of us walk through life with. do it today!
